A Thousand Flying Demons

Word of our unsuccessful rescue attempt flew through the ranks. Two minutes later, sentries ushered us all to the more organized section of the quickly growing camp. Someone pushed me onto a gurney from First Earth and an alchemist descended upon me with his medical magic humming. Two minutes after that, King Odric and Grandmaster Shume charged in.

In true magical planet form, a building erected around us as we spoke. Telekins and fabricators worked together as I talked. A thick frame of metal rose around us. Squares of stone piled upon each other and fused to the frame. This was going to be a sizable building.

“Tell us what happened,” King Odric said the moment he reached us.

I repeated what I’d told the others, describing the attack of Pyranathos. I half-expected Odric to sink in disappointment, but he simply stood straight, nodded to me, and addressed Shume.

“Announce that we are implementing the fourth strategy. Everything moves at emergency speed. Alert the generals and send a messenger down the Jent Path. Let’s pick up the pace.”

“Yes, sir.” Grandmaster Shume headed for the exit but stopped at the door. “You did well to escape that spell, Arch Mage.” I assumed he was talking to me. “Magic or not, you are still the Wielder of Truth. That much is obvious.”

King Odric squeezed my shoulder and went to check on his nephew.

“I’m fine,” insisted Kinza, a few beds away. “I am a genie. You waste your talents on me. See to the others.”

“Kinza,” Rein said, “Just let them check for damage. You may not know you’re hurt.”

Despite Rein’s efforts, she hopped off the gurney and hurried over to me. She twisted the ring on her finger nervously.

“That was the Dragon of Lies.” It wasn’t a question, but a confirmation. “Merely a dragon, but he swept me into his spell. What Sharir has done has never been done before. Agnes, I didn’t even recognize the illusion as a spell. You called Pyranathos a what? A bio soldier? He alone can neutralize our entire army. How many of those experiments are there?”

Everyone in the medical center paused in their duties to hear me to answer. Now I wished I paid more attention to which prison balls were glowing as I plummeted down into the pit of evil.

“Uh, Pyranathos for sure. I hit Delphi’s ball, and I released the wolf demon—”

“The demon who possessed me?” Odric sounded stunned. “You released him? On purpose?”

“If I hadn’t, I’d have died in the pit. He regrets not telling you everything when he had the chance. And believe me, Sharir punished him far worse than you could. Sharir literally melted his cells into electrified goo. He looked like Rein in his water form. Only nastier.”

Kinza tapped her cheek thoughtfully. “Sharir devolved Pyranathos’s physical form as well.”

A crazy thought popped into my mind. “Ew.”

“What’s ‘ew’?” Rein asked.

“Is Sharir trying to prove that beings without a physical body are more powerful? You know, if his bio soldiers win the war against
